Puno – Lake Titicaca: top tips for your Peru adventure
- Climate: Nights in Puno are very cold (around freezing), while daytime temperatures hover around 15°C year-round, with plenty of bright sunshine. If you’re staying on one of the islands, be sure to wear plenty of warm clothing, which is widely available along Puno’s main street.
- Transport: Puno can be reached in about 6.5 hours by bus (Cruz del Sur or Oltursa) from Arequipa.
- Tours: Book a two-day island tour with an overnight stay with local residents. This way, you’ll experience not only the touristy Uros Islands but also the quieter islands of Taquile and Amantani.
- Hotels: Our favorite is Hotel Hacienda Plaza de Armas, located directly on Puno’s main square and close to the main street with the best shops and restaurants.
- Length of stay: We recommend staying a maximum of 3 nights, depending on how well you acclimatize to the altitude. From there, you can book one- or two-day tours on Lake Titicaca.
